Video artworks are up in our show windows. They illustrate matrices of data that underpin the processes inside of every Ahlers sculpture and are closely related System 22. This sculpture, installed and visible up close on the WerkStadt website, is a combination of up-cycled junk tinkered into hand-carved wooden forms. There is a membrane that breathes with electro-chemical changes, and the device is balanced on thin steel legs and a massive concrete base. As you observe the rhythmic movements of data or chemical pressure set on seemingly precarious frameworks that sooner or later will deteriorate and fail - ongoing loops of potential cracks, rips, drips, booms, that shine a light on increasing system failures.
*The WerkStadt as an art project space is partially funded in 2020-2021 by the Berlin Senate for Culture & Europe as a recipient of the basis grant program for structural costs to maintain excellence in the independent Berlin Art Scene.
