pLASTic Ocean & Theseus Wants His Boat Back

Ohn|Macht & 48 h Neukölln: Festivaltheme 2017 is "Shadows"

pLASTic Ocean

Bethany Taylor’s transparent drawings on discarded plastic create shadows, presenting dark eco-narratives existing as the trace of consumption. While the act of drinking bottled water may take 15 minutes or less, the waste plastic it leaves behind to accumulate in earth's ocean gyres takes 1000 years or more to disappear.  Although human consumption is fleeting, its detritus is tragic and monumental.

Theseus Wants His Boat Back

Sean Miller, Director of the John Erickson Museum of Art (JEMA), repurposes architectural fragments from actual art institutions into tools, sculptures, and performative objects. To manipulate the aura of the art institution, Miller has collaborated with termites, fabricated miniature exhibition spaces, and exhibited microscopy of art museum dust samples. His sculpture and photography playfully redistribute, reimagine, and re-contextualize the shadows cast by contemporary art spaces. Like the Puzzle of the Ship of Theseus, Miller’s exhibition confronts the ontological nature of the art object and the exhibition space.
